Gundog Training Course
The length of each course depends on the trainability of the dog, level of birdiness and retrieving the dog naturally has, and what the owner has done with the dog before it comes to school.
The Puppy Course is for puppies that are at least 4 months old and have had all their vaccinations. The course is at least one month long. This course covers introduction to birds, water, and guns. The puppy will be encouraged to retrieve dead birds and training bumpers. Once the puppy has a great desire for birds and retrieving, the gun can be introduced at a distance. Swimming is also encouraged. The puppy is taught the obedience commands. Once the puppy is good at understanding the commands, the electronic collar is introduced. The goal is to have an obedient, birdy puppy that loves to retrieve.
The Basic Gundog Course is for dogs that are at least 6 months of age and have their adult teeth. This course covers everything in the Puppy Course. In addition, the young dog is taught to HOLD, FETCH, and DROP (Force Fetch). At the end of Force Fetch the dog will deliver to hand, hold until told to release the bird. Once these basics are done, the dog is taught to quarter and flush, be steady to shot for waterfowl, work thru decoys, and be able to work out of a layout blind. This course could be 2-4 months depending on the dog.
In the Handling Gundog Course the dogs are taught to do land and water blinds. Being able to take a line, stop on the whistle and take hand signals.
